Getting started (for the 1,000,000th time!)

"One millionth try!  You win a prize you fat fuck!"

So here we go again.

Yeah, I know.

This time, I did something a little bit different, however.  I actually started about a month and a half ago.

I was sitting around the house, stuffing my gob and feeling sorry for myself when I came across a YouTube channel belonging to two brothers calling themselves B.U.F.F. Dudes.  The videos are entertaining and very informative.  And while it's unlikely I'll ever truly be a "Buff Dude"...

Pretty sure this is what my "O" face looks like too.
Sleep well tonight...

...I'd like to at least not be a completely tubby fuck.  So anyway, I took some of their nutritional instruction and as much exercise instruction as I'm able to do right now, and formulated a plan.

I went out and found a "Total Daily Energy Expenditure" (or TDEE) calculator online and filled in my stats.  46, 5"8 (yes, I'm rounding up.  Shut up.), 340 lbs, and sedentary AF.  You can enter body fat percentage too, but since I don't have elephant sized calipers, I'm skipping that for now.

So according to this, I would need to consume 2,876 calories a day to maintain my weight with my current level of activity.  And since I want to "cut", a good place to start is 500 calories less than maintenance daily, which is 2,376.  For me, since I am currently pretty sedentary, I actually decided to lower that number a bit to 2,213, which is a number I can routinely make without going over pretty easily.  the hard part has been figuring the macro split.  Macronutrients being Carbs, Protein, and Fats.  I'm currently running a 30P, 35C, 35F split on my spreadsheets, but my protein intake usually is closer to 35 or 40 daily.  Fats tend to get the short shrift, so I'm still working on dialing all that in.

Exercise has been admittedly kind of hit and miss lately.  I'm hesitant still about jumping back into a full-blown lifting routine as my back and knees are still trash.  So, I'm electing to focus on diet and cardio right now to whittle my weight down some more to take some pressure off my joints and blown disk before I get back into it.  (and who knows...I may be able to get that damn thing finally fixed, 20 years later...)  The last couple of weeks I've been fighting a lot of back pain, so I've been stretching and working on my flexibility.  So I'm hopeful to get back to the gym next week.  That's my goal at least.

So lets talk about where I've been and where I'm going.  I've been using MyFitnessPal to track my intake, and manually setting my goals.  When I first started this particular profile back in March, I was sitting at 360 lbs.  I was really bad about tracking and sticking to (or hell, even having) a program.  On the chart below showing the last 180 days, you'll see a lot of ups and downs and a lot of plateaus where I either failed to chart or things were unchanged.  Admittedly more the former than the latter, but I did what I could.

I got serious around August 9th.  I was back at 350 and decided things needed to change.

So I started following that eating program, and I've been seeing success.  I got stuck for awhile at 345, and now I'm kinda stuck at 339-340.  I'm hoping that getting back to walking is going to help me push past that.  So technically, I've only lost 10 lbs since the beginning of August, but it sounds more impressive to say 25, even thought that was since March.  And because I'm a total attention whore, that's the number I'm going with.  lol

What's been most interesting to me is the changing nature of my relationship with food.  I'm not sure I really have cravings much anymore.  I've definitely been able to walk right past candies, chocolates, and ice cream without having to stop and have one.  And that's been extremely helpful.  I'm not looking at menus anymore trying to decide which meal will give me the most food (yes, that's a thing us fat people do).  I don't drink a lot anymore beyond the occasional beer and nip of scotch, so that's been greatly de-emphasized as well.

I dunno.  I just feel good.

Anyway, I'll be checking back in here from time to time to either talk about things on my mind or provide a status update.  If you're interested in the day to day, follow me on MyFitnessPal as KeithBowerman2022.

See you around!
